Theory and Practice of Adaptation Screenwriting

About this course

This course explores the unique challenges of adaptation, focusing on the conceptualization, selection of the story’s core elements, and corresponding structural adjustments when adapting a literary work, theatrical play, true story, pre-existing audiovisual work, comic, or other source material. It addresses practical adaptation issues, such as identifying the central storyline in the source material, selecting key characters, and refining the thematic focus, while also introducing students to theoretical approaches to adapted storytelling.

The course examines adaptations from various sources, analyzing the distinct characteristics of each original text. Through creative writing exercises throughout the semester, students engage with applied aspects of screenwriting related to adaptation. Additionally, they deepen their knowledge through discussions with screenwriters, script editors, producers, and directors who specialize in adapted narratives.
