Screenwriting Workshop – Television Series
About this course
The primary goal of this course is to apply the knowledge that postgraduate students have acquired in the other two courses of the semester. In this workshop, students follow a professional script development process, going through all stages of writing (premise, synopsis, outline, step outline, and/or treatment) from the initial idea to a television script of approximately twenty-five (25) minutes and another of approximately fifty (50) minutes.
Using student scripts as a starting point, various aspects of television screenwriting are examined in an applied context throughout the semester. Additionally, students deepen their understanding through meetings with screenwriters, script editors, producers, and directors experienced in television writing. In some of these meetings, students present their scripts and receive feedback on key elements such as character development, structure, and dialogue.
The course is organized into small groups, encouraging collaboration and team-based writing (writers’ room structure). Students enhance both their individual creative writing skills and their analytical abilities by reviewing and editing their peers’ scripts. The produced scripts become part of the students’ portfolios, aiming for future professional use.
